Reconciling biodiversity conservation and flood risk reduction: The new strategy for freshwater protected areas

چکیده
Aim Natural disaster risk reduction (DRR) is becoming a more important function of protected area (PAs) for current and future global warming. However, biodiversity conservation DRR have been handled separately their interrelationship has not explicitly addressed. This mainly because, due prevailing strategies criteria PA placement, large proportion PAs are currently located far from human-occupied areas, habitats in areas largely ignored as potential sites despite high biodiversity. If intensely developed lowland with flooding overlap conservation, it would be reasonable to try harmonize human development human-inhabited areas. Here, we examined whether extant can conserve macroinvertebrate freshwater fish flood management might suitable designate (FPAs). Location Across Japan. Methods We analysed the relationship between candidate new FPAs land use intensity at national scale across Japan based on distribution data 131 species 1395 species. Results found that overlapped approximately 30% conservation-priority grid cells (1 km2) both taxa. Particularly red-listed species, only one three achieved representation target within PAs. Moreover, than 40% were Main conclusions Floodplain provides habitat many organisms helps control floodwaters, so establishing could win-win strategy conserving enhancing ecosystem-based (eco-DRR).

Biodiversity recovery following delta-wide measures for flood risk reduction
Biodiversity declined markedly over the past 150 years, with the biodiversity loss in fluvial ecosystems exceeding the global average. River restoration now aims at flood safety while enhancing biodiversity and has had success locally. However, at the scale of large river distributaries, the recovery remained elusive. We quantify changes in biodiversity of protected and endangered species over ...
متن کاملEvidence for Biodiversity Conservation in Protected Landscapes
A growing number of protected areas are defined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as protected landscapes and seascapes, or category V protected areas, one of six protected area categories based on management approach. Category V now makes up over half the protected area coverage in Europe, for instance. While the earliest category V areas were designated mainly for t...
متن کاملParticipatory Simulation for Collective Management of Protected Areas for Biodiversity Conservation and Social Inclusion
In this paper, we introduce a research project aimed at methodological and computer-based support for participatory management of protected areas, in order to promote biodiversity conservation and social inclusion. Our starting point is the “companion modelling” approach, as defined by the ComMod group, a movement of researchers created in 2003. Their method, called MAS/RPG, consists in iterati...
متن کاملEffectiveness of marine protected areas in the Philippines for biodiversity conservation.
Quantifying the extent to which existing reserves meet conservation objectives and identifying gaps in coverage are vital to developing systematic protected-area networks. Despite widespread recognition of the Philippines as a global priority for marine conservation, limited work has been undertaken to evaluate the conservation effectiveness of existing marine protected areas (MPAs). Targets fo...

© The Ecological Society of America www.frontiersinecology.org H environmental impacts are now so extensive and pervasive that many consider that the planet has entered a new geological epoch – the Anthropocene. Increasingly, efforts to conserve biodiversity are confronted with new challenges resulting from profound changes to many biotic and abiotic processes (Steffen et al. 2004; MA 2005), wh...
